Wisconsin is a treasure trove of natural wonders, and one such gem that deserves your attention is the captivating Natural Bridge State Park. Tucked away in the scenic Driftless area, this park beckons families to embark on a remarkable journey filled with hiking adventures, stunning landscapes, and a captivating glimpse into Native American history. Join us as we unveil the hidden beauty of Natural Bridge State Park, a perfect destination for family travel in Wisconsin.
The park derives its name from the awe-inspiring centerpiece, a magnificent sandstone arch that stands tall at 25 feet and spans an impressive 35 feet in width. Crafted over centuries by the relentless forces of wind and water erosion, this weathered formation serves as a testament to the raw power and enduring beauty of nature. What makes it even more remarkable is the fact that this arch managed to evade the icy grip of the glaciers during the last Ice Age, making it a rare geological marvel in Wisconsin.
With my daughter by my side, we eagerly set off on the 2-mile hiking trail that winds its way through the park, leading us closer to the mesmerizing natural bridge. Starting from the parking lot, we ventured into the lush woods, encountering a gentle incline that posed no significant challenge.
And then, there it was, the majestic natural bridge, standing proudly amidst the verdant surroundings. Its sheer magnitude, with an opening measuring 25 feet high and 35 feet wide, left us in awe of its grandeur.
Adjacent to the bridge, we discovered a rock shelter that once provided solace to Native American communities over 11,000 years ago during the glacier’s melting. This historical site offered us a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Native American culture that thrived in this region long before our time. Natural Bridge State Park not only presents breathtaking natural beauty but also serves as a portal to the captivating history of Wisconsin’s indigenous peoples.
As we ventured further, the park unveiled its diverse landscape, revealing vast stretches of oak woods and open prairies adorned with vibrant wildflowers. The picturesque scenery painted a vivid backdrop for our family adventures. Every step along the hiking trails immersed us in the wonders of the natural world while imparting knowledge about the customs and traditions of the Native American inhabitants.
Natural Bridge State Park offers a tranquil and serene environment, attracting visitors in search of a peaceful nature retreat. While many visitors come solely to hike to the natural bridge and back, I wholeheartedly recommend exploring the entire trail. Although some sections are suitable for young hikers.

This beautiful destination is easily explored in a couple of hours. We think it is a great park to add to a day of exploring nature and knocking out a few other parks in the same trip. Other nearby parks to consider pairing with a visit to Natural Bridge State Park are Devil’s Lake State Park, Tower Hill State Park, Governor Dodge State Park or Cave of the Mounds.
