Our recent adventure in the Driftless region of Wisconsin was nothing short of magical. From exploring historical ruins to immersing ourselves in the serene beauty of the countryside, this trip offered a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. Here’s a glimpse into our journey, featuring the Matz Farmstead Ruins, Pier Natural Bridge Park, and a cozy tiny home stay in Norwalk. Plus, we embarked on the Elroy-Sparta Trail, famous for its legendary tunnels.

Matz Farmstead Ruins: A Step Back in Time

Our first stop was the Matz Farmstead Ruins. Nestled in the quiet hills, these ruins offer a peaceful retreat where history whispers through the remains. As we wandered among the stone foundations, it felt like stepping back in time. The view of the ruins was spectacular, offering a tranquil spot to pause and appreciate the serenity of the Driftless area.

Pier Natural Bridge Park: Nature’s Marvel

Next on our itinerary was Pier Natural Bridge Park. This park is a testament to the natural beauty of Wisconsin, with its unique rock formations and lush surroundings. We marveled at the natural bridge, a stunning arch carved by years of erosion, and enjoyed a leisurely hike through the park’s scenic trails. It’s a delightful spot for those who appreciate nature and outdoor exploration.

A Tranquil Stay in Norwalk

After our day of exploring, we made our way to Norwalk, where we had booked a tiny home Airbnb. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle, this tiny home was the perfect place to unwind. We spent the evening sitting by the fire, gazing at the stars, and soaking in the peaceful ambiance. The Driftless region, known for having the fourth-largest Amish population in the country, added to the charm of our stay with sightings of horse-drawn buggies and Amish farms dotting the landscape. It was the ideal spot to rest and recharge before our big bike ride the next day.

Breakfast at Dorset Valley School Restaurant and Bakery

Our morning started with a hearty breakfast at the Dorset Valley School Restaurant and Bakery. The staff welcomed us with warm smiles, and the aroma of freshly baked goods filled the air. The prices were reasonable, and the food was delightful. My son was particularly impressed by a cinnamon roll that was nearly the size of his head! It was the perfect fuel for our upcoming adventure on the Elroy-Sparta Trail.

Elroy-Sparta Bike Ride: A Classic Adventure

This was our second time tackling the Elroy-Sparta Trail, and it was just as exhilarating as the first. Starting in Kendall and ending in Sparta, we covered 26 miles, including all three historic train tunnels. The experience was a thrilling blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue. Interested in biking the Elroy-Sparta trail? Be sure to check out our Elroy-Sparta Know Before You Go post. We ran into one couple that was unprepared without headlamps or raincoats, which we highly recommend for tunnel #3. We noticed shortly after they turned around and missed enjoying tunnel #3. This trail is a must-ride for bike and adventure enthusiasts, offering a unique glimpse into Wisconsin’s rich rail history.
