When people think of outdoor adventures in Wisconsin, state parks like Devil’s Lake, Peninsula, or Parfreys Glen often come to mind. But what about county parks? While they might not have the same name recognition, many of Wisconsin’s county parks offer breathtaking landscapes, waterfalls, caves, and unique geological wonders—often with fewer crowds.

We’ve made it our mission to explore many Wisconsin county parks and share the ones we think are truly worth a visit. Here are five that stand out for their natural beauty, history, and outdoor recreation.

1. Pier Natural Bridge County Park (Richland County)

Nestled in Wisconsin’s Driftless Region, Pier Natural Bridge County Park showcases a stunning sandstone formation where the Pine River flows beneath a natural bridge. Towering rock walls give the park a fortress-like feel, and a man-made tunnel allows visitors to walk through the rock itself, adding an extra element of adventure to this scenic spot.

Why It’s Worth a Visit:
✔️ Rare Natural Bridge Formation – A towering rock ridge carved by water over time.
✔️ Scenic Hiking  – Stairs lead to the top of the bluff for incredible views.
✔️ Quiet, Underrated Spot – A great stop on a road trip through the Driftless Region.

If you love Wisconsin waterfalls, Dave’s Falls is a must-visit. Located along the Pike River, this park features picturesque cascading falls, scenic hiking trails, and a wooden bridge that offers a postcard-perfect view of the rapids. Built in 1900 as a luxury retreat, the limestone structure later became a Prohibition-era speakeasy before being damaged by fire and storms. Though abandoned, its towering stone walls remain a photogenic and mysterious landmark.

Beyond the ruins, the Cherney Maribel Caves County Park is home to natural caves and rugged limestone cliffs, part of the Niagara Escarpment. Water and ice have carved passageways into the rock, creating several caves that visitors can explore along the scenic trails.

Why It’s Worth a Visit:
✔️ Photograph the eerie ruins of the Maribel Caves Hotel.
✔️ Explore natural caves carved into the limestone cliffs.
✔️ Hike scenic woodland trails with unique rock formations.
